Claude Team vs Enterprise: what changes when every token is billed

Updated 2026-10-25 · 10 min read

Short version (Anthropic pages, checked 25 Oct 2026): a Claude Team Standard seat is $25 a month billed monthly or $20 billed annually, Premium is $125 or $100, and usage up to each seat's limits is included. Claude Enterprise is “US$20/seat/month, billed annually, 20 seat minimum”, but “the seat fee covers access only, and all usage is billed separately at API rates.” Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention, role-based access and a HIPAA-ready option. Both plans include Claude Code, SSO and no model training on your content by default. On our arithmetic, Enterprise's seat fee equals an annual Team Standard seat, so for Standard users every dollar of usage is extra; against annual Premium seats it costs less only while average usage stays under $80 a seat a month. Pick Enterprise for the compliance and identity controls or for more than 150 seats, not to cut the bill.

Sources: the plan cards and the Team / Enterprise comparison table on claude.com/pricing (opens in a new tab), plus What is the Enterprise plan? (Claude Help Center) (opens in a new tab) for usage, seat minimums and payment. “Yes” and “No” mirror Anthropic's own table.

The real difference: how usage is paid for

  • Team: each seat comes with a usage allowance. Anthropic's Team article lists a “larger per-session usage allowance than the Pro plan” and the “Option to purchase usage credits” so members can keep working after reaching limits. What is the Team plan? (opens in a new tab)
  • Enterprise: “The seat fee only covers access to the platform and doesn't include any usage. All usage across Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork is billed separately at standard API rates”, and there is “no included token allowance.” Admins can set spend limits for the organization and for each user. What is the Enterprise plan? (opens in a new tab)
  • Self-serve Enterprise pays up front: usage “is purchased upfront in credits”, and “When your credits run out, usage stops until an Owner, Primary Owner, or custom role with the Billing permission set to ‘Can manage’ purchases more.” Sales-assisted plans are instead “billed monthly in arrears”. How am I billed for my Enterprise plan? (opens in a new tab)
  • US-only inference costs more: with that setting on, “usage is billed at 1.1x standard API rates for Claude Opus 4.6, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and later models.” Enterprise billing (opens in a new tab)

Per-token rates for each model are on claude.com/pricing (opens in a new tab). Anthropic doesn't publish what a typical developer uses in a month, so we don't estimate an Enterprise total. Your own Team usage analytics are the best starting point.

Security and data controls Enterprise adds

Anthropic says Enterprise “includes everything in the Team plan, plus additional security and compliance features”. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab) The ones it lists:

  • Audit logs, which “capture key information about user actions, system events, and data access.”
  • SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) for user provisioning.
  • Custom data retention controls.
  • Compliance API to “programmatically access Claude usage data including activity logs, chat histories, and file content”, and an Analytics API for engagement and adoption metrics.
  • Customer-managed encryption keys and US-only inference.
  • HIPAA-ready configuration: “Eligible organizations can enable a HIPAA-ready configuration and accept a BAA from organization settings.” For coding teams, note the Claude Code caveat: without the HIPAA configuration for Claude Code (local mode) or zero data retention, Claude Code is “available but not covered under your BAA”, and the VS Code and JetBrains extensions are not covered either. Claude Code on Team and Enterprise plans (opens in a new tab)

The pricing page also lists role-based access with fine-grained permissions, network-level access control and IP allowlisting for Enterprise. What Team already has: SSO, domain verification, central billing, usage analytics, admin controls for connectors and “No model training on your content by default”. For training, retention and DPA terms across tools see AI coding tool data terms.

Break-even: when is Enterprise cheaper?

Our arithmetic on the list prices above, per seat per month, before tax. It compares the seat fee plus usage on Enterprise with the Team seat price, and assumes your Team members stay within their seat limits (if they buy Team usage credits, add that to the Team side).

Team seat you'd replaceTeam price per seatEnterprise seat feeEnterprise costs less only if average usage per seat is under
Standard, billed annually$20$20$0: never, every dollar of usage is extra
Standard, billed monthly$25$20 (annual only)$5 a month
Premium, billed annually$100$20$80 a month
Premium, billed monthly$125$20 (annual only)$105 a month

Two more differences that the per-seat view hides: Team includes up to $500 a month of pooled API credits that Enterprise doesn't (they cover the Claude API and Console, not interactive Claude Code), and Enterprise has no usage limits per seat, so one heavy user can't run out mid-task, but can run up the bill unless you set per-user spend limits. Worked example: 15 and 30 developers

Our arithmetic, seats only, annual billing, US list prices before tax. The Enterprise rows leave out usage because it depends entirely on your team.

15 developers30 developers
Claude Team, all Standard15 × $20 = $300 a month ($3,600 a year)30 × $20 = $600 a month ($7,200 a year)
Claude Team, 80% Standard and 20% Premium12 × $20 + 3 × $100 = $540 a month ($6,480 a year)24 × $20 + 6 × $100 = $1,080 a month ($12,960 a year)
Claude Enterprise (self-serve), seat fees20-seat minimum, so 20 × $20 = $400 a month ($4,800 a year) plus all usage30 × $20 = $600 a month ($7,200 a year) plus all usage
Usage budget at which Enterprise matches the mixed Team$540 − $400 = $140 a month for the whole team$1,080 − $600 = $480 a month, about $16 a developer

For a team of about 15, the 20-seat minimum alone makes Enterprise $100 a month more than all-Standard Team before anyone uses a token. The 80/20 seat mix is an example to show the arithmetic, not a measurement of real teams.

Moving from Team to Enterprise: what to check first

  • It's one-way on self-serve: “Migrating an organization from Team to Enterprise via this pathway is not reversible.” Chats, projects and member roles carry over if you upgrade the same organization. Migrate your organization from Team to Enterprise (opens in a new tab)
  • Some Team features start switched off: on Enterprise, skills, code execution and file creation, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, standalone Claude Design and Claude in Chrome are “default-off”. Your data is kept, but an admin has to turn them back on.
  • Check seat assignments: after migration “some users may appear as No seat assigned” and have no access until an admin fixes it.
  • Raise spend limits before go-live: “Once the org-level spend limit is reached, all users lose access immediately until the spend limit is raised or the new month begins.”
  • Seats are locked for the year: “Seats cannot be removed mid-term on self-serve Enterprise plans”, and added seats are charged pro rata straight away. Enterprise billing (opens in a new tab)
  • Above 150 seats there's no choice: “Team plans support up to 150 seats”, and beyond that Anthropic points you to Enterprise. Claude Team plan (opens in a new tab)

Checklist before choosing

  1. List the controls you actually need (SCIM, audit logs, Compliance API, custom retention, a BAA). If none, Team covers SSO and no-training-by-default already.
  2. Export a month of Team usage analytics and price it at API rates for the models your developers use. That's your Enterprise usage line.
  3. Count seats against the 20-seat self-serve minimum.
  4. Decide who can buy usage credits and set per-user spend limits, so usage doesn't stop mid-sprint on self-serve.
  5. Time the switch for your Team renewal: Team seat reductions only take effect at renewal, and the migration can't be undone.

FAQ

What's the difference between Claude Team and Claude Enterprise?

Team seats include usage up to per-seat limits: Standard is $25 a month billed monthly or $20 annually, Premium $125 or $100, for 2 to 150 seats. Enterprise is US$20 a seat a month billed annually with a 20-seat minimum, and all usage is billed separately at API rates. Enterprise adds SCIM, audit logs, the Compliance API, custom data retention, role-based access and a HIPAA-ready option (checked 25 Oct 2026).

Is Claude Enterprise cheaper than Claude Team?

Usually not on list prices. Enterprise's US$20 seat fee is the same as an annual Team Standard seat, but it includes no usage, so every dollar of usage is extra. Against annual Premium seats at $100, Enterprise costs less only while average usage stays under $80 a seat a month (our arithmetic).

What is the minimum number of seats for Claude Enterprise?

20 seats for self-serve Enterprise and 50 for sales-assisted, according to Anthropic's Help Center. Team needs at least 2 seats and supports up to 150.

Does Claude Enterprise have better security than Team?

It adds controls Team doesn't have: audit logs, SCIM, role-based access, custom data retention, the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys, US-only inference, IP allowlisting and a HIPAA-ready configuration. Both plans have SSO and no model training on your content by default.

Is Claude Code included in Claude Enterprise?

Yes. Anthropic says Claude Code is included with the single Enterprise seat on new and self-serve plans, but its usage is billed at API rates like all other Enterprise usage. On Team, Claude Code is included with every seat within the seat's usage limits.

Can we go back to Team after upgrading to Enterprise?

Not through the self-serve path: Anthropic says migrating an organization from Team to Enterprise that way is not reversible. Self-serve Enterprise seats also can't be removed mid-term.
