Cursor vs Claude Code in 2026: AI editor or terminal agent?

Updated 2026-10-17 · 5 min read

Verdict: They don't have to compete. Claude Code's extension runs inside Cursor on your Claude subscription. Pick Cursor if you want a full AI editor and are happy with Cursor's own Grok and Composer models (Plus $8, Premium $30). Pick Claude Code ($20 with Claude Pro) if you specifically want Claude models: on Cursor, Claude models are only on Premium and above, billed at API list price from prepaid credit. Many people use Cursor as the editor and Claude Code as the agent.

The model question (the part most comparisons miss)

Cursor is now sold as part of The X Subscription. Each paid plan includes a weekly pool for Cursor's own models, shared with Grok Chat, Imagine, Voice and Grok Bot. Third-party models such as Claude, GPT and Gemini aren't in the pool. On Premium and above you can use them from the first request at the model's API list price, paid from prepaid credit. Plus and Free don't get third-party models at all, and Plus runs at fixed settings: no Auto, Cloud Agents, Bugbot or your own API keys. Cursor models and pricing docs (opens in a new tab)

So if “Cursor with Claude” is what you're after, your realistic options are Cursor Premium plus prepaid credit, or Claude Code's extension inside Cursor, which Anthropic says your Pro or Max plan covers. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

Older Cursor plans (Pro, Pro+, Ultra on the legacy pricing) keep working with two monthly pools and on-demand usage. Cursor docs (opens in a new tab)

Limits compared

Cursor: the pool refreshes weekly. When it runs out you can wait, keep going on prepaid credit at the listed per-model rates (for example Composer 2.5 at $0.50 input and $2.50 output per million tokens), or upgrade. Cursor says requests are never downgraded in quality or speed. Cursor docs (opens in a new tab)

Claude Code: Claude's Pro and Max plans both have a five-hour session limit plus a weekly limit, and they're shared between Claude chat and Claude Code. Claude Code with Pro/Max (Claude Help Center) (opens in a new tab) Past the limit, you can turn on usage credits at API rates, upgrade to Max, or wait for the reset.

Who should pick which

  • You want the lowest price for an AI editor: Cursor Plus at $8. Accept Grok and Composer models only.
  • You want Claude's models without per-token bills: Claude Code on Claude Pro.
  • You want both: install the Claude Code extension in Cursor and keep Cursor on Free or Plus.
  • You want cloud agents and code review in the editor: Cursor Premium (Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot).
  • You mostly work over SSH or in the terminal: Claude Code.
