How to make a game with AI in 2026: a step-by-step guide for beginners

Updated 2026-10-17 · 9 min read

Short answer: 1) Pick where the game will live (browser, Roblox, Unity or Godot). 2) Pick an AI that works there: Rosebud AI for no-code browser games, Roblox Assistant in Roblox Studio, Unity's official plugin plus Claude Code or Codex, or any coding agent for Godot. 3) Build one mechanic per prompt and playtest after each. 4) Add AI art and sound last, and check the licences. Free path: Rosebud Free, Roblox Assistant, or Google Antigravity with Godot.

Step 2: Set up the AI for your path

Browser with Rosebud AI

Sign up for the Free plan, which starts with 8,000 credits and refills weekly in eligible regions. An edit with the default AI, Rosie, costs about 2,000 credits, and an edit with a premium model about 20,000. Images and sprite animations cost 200–2,000 credits, sounds about 1,000 and 3D models about 1,000. Rosebud AI pricing (opens in a new tab)

Roblox

Open Assistant in Studio. For an external agent, go to Assistant → … → Manage MCP Servers → Enable Studio as MCP server, then quick-connect Claude Code, Cursor, Codex CLI, Antigravity, Claude Desktop, Gemini CLI or VS Code. Unity

Use Unity 6 or later. Install Unity's official plugin into Claude Code or Codex (it bundles Unity skills, the CLI and the MCP server), or connect another agent through the MCP server via the Unity CLI. Unity's AI tools (unity.com) (opens in a new tab) Details: best AI for Unity.

Godot

Create a project, open the folder in your coding agent and keep Godot open beside it. For editor control and AI playtesting, add an MCP server such as Godot MCP Studio (Lite is free; Pro is €39 one-time until 4 November 2026, then €59). Step 3: Write a one-paragraph game brief

Before any prompt, write down: the core mechanic (one verb, such as jump, dodge or collect), the win and lose conditions, the camera (top-down, side or 3D), and the controls. Keep it to one screen. A small, finished game teaches you more than a big, broken one.

Step 4: Ask for a plan, then build one feature at a time

  1. “Read the brief and propose a plan in five or fewer steps. Don't write code yet.” Roblox Assistant has a Planning Mode that only runs when you click Build. Roblox Assistant docs (opens in a new tab)
  2. “Implement step 1 only.”
  3. Playtest.
  4. Paste any error back to the AI, or let an MCP-connected agent read the console and start the playtest itself.
  5. Commit to Git (or duplicate your Roblox place) before the next step.

Step 5: Add art and sound

Only once the game is fun with placeholder shapes. Roblox Assistant can generate meshes, materials and procedural models (up to 50 procedural models per rolling 24 hours). Roblox Assistant docs (opens in a new tab) Rosebud generates sprites, sounds, 3D models and skyboxes on credits. Step 6: Check rights before you publish

Step 7: Share it and keep going

Browser games share as a link, and Roblox games publish from Studio. For Godot and Unity, export a build. Then add one feature per session. When your AI plan runs out mid-project, see hit my usage limit. Keeping a free backup from another company means you don't have to stop.
