Claude Design is shutting down at claude.ai/design on 14 Dec 2026: what to do

Updated 2026-10-18 · 9 min read

The facts (checked 18 Oct 2026): Anthropic says “The standalone Claude Design site (claude.ai/design) will close on December 14, 2026”. After that, claude.ai/design will take you to Claude. Claude Design itself isn't going away: it now runs inside Claude conversations, the Artifacts tab and Claude Code. Before 14 Dec: migrate your design systems, export any projects you need as a .zip, and save anything from your chats and comments. Those stay in the standalone version and are deleted after it closes, and public project links stop working.

What's closing, and when

What gets deleted or stops working

Anthropic lists what isn't carried over: “These stay in the standalone version and deleted after it closes, per our data retention practices, in December 2026”:

  • “Your chats with Claude”
  • “Comments on your projects and design systems”
  • Public links: “Public links to projects in the standalone version will no longer work after it closes.”
  • Originals: “Your originals keep working in the standalone version until it closes on December 14, 2026. After that, they're deleted, per our data retention practices.”
  • Anthropic's advice: “Save anything you need from your chats and comments before the standalone version closes.” Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

What happens to your projects

“Your projects stay in the standalone version and keep working until it closes.” The Artifacts page in Claude also lists up to 60 of them, and they open in the standalone version. Anthropic adds: “More details about moving your projects to Claude are coming soon.” On the checked date, the article also said “You don't need to do anything with your projects yet.” Even so, the export steps below are the only way that article gives to keep a copy of a project. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

How to migrate your design systems

  1. Open the Artifacts page in Claude.
  2. Click “Migrate team design systems” in the “Claude Design lives here now” banner. If you closed the banner, choose it from the Claude Design menu at the top right.
  3. Click “Migrate” to confirm. On individual plans there's no confirmation step, and the migration starts right away.
  4. Wait for it to finish. It keeps running if you close the window.
  5. Check the results. Each migrated design system is listed with its owner and an “Open” link.
  • Once per organization: “One migration brings over every design system in your organization, including other people's”. “Anyone who can use Claude Design can start it, not just your organization's owners.”
  • Not migrated: “Empty design systems aren't migrated, and neither are ones made from a built-in starter theme, even if you've edited them.”
  • Sharing: “Published design systems that aren't private will be shared with everyone in your organization”. On individual plans, nothing is shared.
  • Team and Enterprise owners: check that artifacts and design systems are turned on. “On Enterprise plans, design systems are off by default.”
  • Zero data retention orgs: “Organizations with zero data retention (ZDR) can't turn on artifacts, so they can't migrate.” Anthropic tells them to download their projects before the standalone version closes.
  • If a design system fails: it's listed under “Couldn't be migrated” with a reason, such as “it's too large”. Use “Fix in Claude Design Standalone”, run the check, fix the listed files, then migrate again. Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

How to export your projects

Anthropic says you can't download every project at once: “Not all at once. You can download them one at a time”.

  1. Open the project in the standalone version.
  2. Click “Share”, then choose “Project HTML”. For a slide deck, it's under “More formats and apps”.
  3. Keep “Project archive” selected and click “Export”.

“You get a .zip file with every file in the project. It's free and doesn't count toward your usage limits.” Claude Help Center (opens in a new tab)

Where design-to-code work goes next

Anthropic's path: Claude Design inside Claude and Claude Code

  • Where it runs now: “You can now use Claude Design in any conversation with Claude, including in Claude Code and the Artifacts tab”. Claude Design product page (opens in a new tab)
  • Design systems: “Use /design-sync to pull in your design system, so everything you build in Claude Design starts from your existing components.”
  • Handing off to code: “When a design is ready to become software, you can hand it off to Claude Code, which continues from your existing work instead of starting over from a screenshot.” From Claude Code, /design imports a design into your codebase, exports your code as a live prototype, or builds the whole thing. Get started with Claude Design (opens in a new tab)
  • Plans: Claude Design is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
  • Usage: “Claude Design counts toward the same usage limits as the rest of Claude.” Anthropic notes that it “previously had its own weekly allowance”, and all Claude Design activity now counts toward your plan's shared limits. For how those limits work, see Claude Code pricing explained.

Other design-to-code and app-builder tools we cover

Anthropic's export list for Claude Design includes “Base44, … Lovable, … Replit, v0, Vercel”, among others, so you can send a finished design to some of these tools directly (Claude Help Center) (opens in a new tab). Bolt.new isn't on that list (checked 18 Oct 2026). Each tool's description below is its own homepage wording, not our testing.

If you're reviewing your team's AI tool spend

Claude Design no longer has a separate allowance, so design work now comes out of the same Claude plan limits as everything else. If you're reviewing your team's AI tool spend after this change, the team plan cost calculator lists seat prices and minimums for the main team plans.

FAQ

When does Claude Design close?

The standalone Claude Design site at claude.ai/design closes on December 14, 2026, according to Anthropic's help center (checked 18 Oct 2026). You can keep using it until then, and after that claude.ai/design takes you to Claude. Claude Design itself continues inside Claude conversations, the Artifacts tab and Claude Code.

Will I lose my projects?

Your projects keep working in the standalone version until it closes. Anthropic says the originals are deleted after that, and that more details about moving projects to Claude are coming soon. Chats with Claude and comments on projects and design systems are not carried over and are deleted in December 2026. Public links to standalone projects stop working when it closes.

How do I export my Claude Design projects?

One at a time. Open the project at claude.ai/design, click Share, choose Project HTML (for a slide deck, it's under More formats and apps), keep Project archive selected and click Export. You get a .zip with every file in the project. Anthropic says it's free and doesn't count toward your usage limits.

How do I move my design systems to Claude?

Open the Artifacts page in Claude and click Migrate team design systems in the Claude Design lives here now banner, then confirm. One migration brings over every design system in your organization. Empty design systems and ones made from a built-in starter theme aren't migrated. Organizations with zero data retention can't migrate and should download their projects instead.

What replaces standalone Claude Design?

Anthropic's replacement is Claude Design inside Claude: in any conversation, in the Artifacts tab, and in Claude Code with /design and /design-sync. If you'd rather use a separate app builder, Claude Design can export to tools including Lovable, v0, Replit and Base44. We compare those, plus Bolt.new, on our app builder pages.
